I’ve dated many people since my celiac diagnosis. 😬 If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s this: Dating is still dating, you guys! It’s still hard! It still sucks! 🤷♂️
I used to worry all of the time what people would think about me being gluten-free. I would hide it, lie about it, or not bring it up at all. I soon realized that this isn’t fair to my date nor me. Yes, being gluten-free or having invisible illnesses makes dating more difficult. But it doesn’t have to control my entire dating life.
I went gluten-free to feel BETTER. I went gluten-free to be HAPPIER. I went gluten-free to EMPOWER me. Why should I let being gluten-free get in the way of my dating life too?
From trial and error (i.e. a LOT of dating...yikes) I learned to talk about being gluten-free from the get-go and show people it’s just a part of who I am. It’s just a part of what makes me, me. If they don’t like that and then they can move on! Luckily, my dating life has gotten a lot better since then 😌 But overall, I deserve to be with people who accept me for who I am anyways. Not just the parts that they like.
This is the mantra we should all feel about ourselves. We should all feel empowered to be who we are, invisible illnesses and all.
With that being said, don’t worry about your invisible illnesses getting in the way of your dating life. You are strong and you are you. Spend time with the people who want to be around you for who YOU are. That includes dating too 😉
